WhatsApp QR Code Generator
Quick answer: A WhatsApp QR code encodes a wa. me click-to-chat URL, which opens a WhatsApp conversation when scanned. The phone number must be in full international format with no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, and no leading zero — for example, 15551234567 for a US number.
How to create a WhatsApp QR code
- Enter the phone number in international format: country code followed by the number, with no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, and no brackets.
- Type an optional pre-filled message that will appear in the WhatsApp chat compose box when the recipient opens the link.
- Verify the generated wa.me URL shown in the preview matches the number you intended.
- Customise the pattern style, finder-eye style, colours and logo if needed.
- Download the code as PNG, SVG, WEBP or JPG at up to 4096 px.
The QR code is generated in your browser as you type. Nothing you enter is uploaded to a server.
What a WhatsApp QR code is
A WhatsApp QR code is a standard QR code whose payload is a wa.me click-to-chat URL. The QR symbol itself follows ISO/IEC 18004, the international standard for QR Code symbology. The wa.me URL scheme is published and maintained by WhatsApp (a Meta product) in the official WhatsApp FAQ.
When someone scans the code, their device opens WhatsApp — or the WhatsApp website if the app is not installed — and starts a new conversation with the encoded number. If a pre-filled message was included, it appears in the compose field, ready to send. The recipient still chooses whether to send it; scanning does not send any message automatically.
This type of QR code is distinct from the personal QR code inside the WhatsApp app (Settings > QR Code). That in-app code is generated by WhatsApp itself, is tied to a specific account, and cannot be customised. A wa.me QR code is a URL you build, can be printed on any material, and can have any design applied to it.
The wa.me URL format
Syntax
WhatsApp's official FAQ defines three URL forms:
Without a pre-filled message: https://wa.me/<number>
With a pre-filled message: https://wa.me/<number>?text=<URL-encoded-message>
Message only (no specific recipient — used for sharing): https://wa.me/?text=<URL-encoded-message>
Phone number format — the most common mistake
The number field must follow E.164 international format with one specific modification: the leading plus sign is omitted. The format is:
country code + subscriber number, digits only, no spaces, no dashes, no brackets, no leading zero
| Country | Correct | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| United States (+1) | 15551234567 | +15551234567 / 1-555-123-4567 / 5551234567 |
| United Kingdom (+44) | 447700900000 | +447700900000 / 07700 900000 |
| Germany (+49) | 4930123456 | +4930123456 / 030 123456 |
| Brazil (+55) | 5511987654321 | +5511987654321 / 011 98765-4321 |
| India (+91) | 919876543210 | +919876543210 / 09876543210 |
A number with the wrong format will either produce a WhatsApp error page or open a conversation with a non-existent number. Always remove the leading zero from the national-dial format before entering the number.
Pre-filled message encoding
The optional message is a URL query parameter. Spaces must be encoded as %20 and special characters must be percent-encoded per RFC 3986. Most browsers handle this encoding if you construct the URL in an address bar, but a generator should handle it for you.
Example with a pre-filled message: https://wa.me/15551234567?text=I%27m%20interested%20in%20your%20product
The apostrophe in "I'm" becomes %27. A plain apostrophe in the URL will cause some clients to misparse the link.
Click-to-chat versus the WhatsApp in-app QR code
These two things are regularly confused in searches. They are different products.
| wa.me click-to-chat QR code | WhatsApp in-app QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| Generated by | You, using any tool | WhatsApp, inside the app |
| Payload | A wa.me URL | WhatsApp's own format |
| Customisable design | Yes — pattern, colour, logo | No |
| Printable | Yes | Yes (screenshot only) |
| Scanned by | Any camera pointing at WhatsApp | WhatsApp's built-in scanner |
| Best for | Marketing, signage, business cards | Sharing your personal contact |
The wa.me link works from any camera-enabled device with WhatsApp installed or a browser that can reach web.whatsapp.com. It is not a direct video or voice call link; it opens a text chat.
WhatsApp Business use cases
WhatsApp Business accounts use the same wa.me URL format as personal accounts. The phone number in the URL is the number registered to the WhatsApp Business account.
A pre-filled message is particularly useful for business entry points. Common examples:
Customer service intake. A QR code on product packaging or a receipt encodes "I need help with my order" so the customer opens a chat with the service query already composed.
Appointment enquiries. A QR code on a clinic or salon window pre-fills "I would like to book an appointment" to reduce friction at the first contact.
Product enquiries. A code on a trade-show stand or flyer pre-fills the product name so the sales team immediately knows which item the person is asking about.
Event check-in. A code on a conference badge links back to the organiser's WhatsApp number so attendees can ask logistical questions on the day.
When to use a WhatsApp QR code
Business cards for markets where WhatsApp is the primary communication channel. In many regions WhatsApp is more commonly used than SMS or email for business contact, and a wa.me QR code on a card is the expected channel.
Retail signage and window stickers. A code on the shop door lets customers start a conversation outside opening hours; messages wait until the team is available.
Packaging inserts. A code inside the box links to a WhatsApp support number so the buyer can ask questions without searching for a contact page.
Print advertising. A flyer or poster code with a pre-filled message matching the campaign offer (for example, "Send me the discount code") makes it easy to measure which print ad drove responses.
WhatsApp Business catalogue entry. A code on a printed catalogue page links directly to the business chat so the customer can ask about that item.
Design and print requirements
Keep a quiet zone of at least four modules on all sides of the QR code, as specified in ISO/IEC 18004. Scanners use this margin to locate the symbol boundary.
Print at 2 cm by 2 cm or larger for close-range scanning such as a business card. Increase to 3 cm or more for table signage read from arm's length, and to 8 cm or more for a poster read from a metre or more away.
The wa.me URL is short, so the QR code version will be low (fewer modules) and the modules will be relatively large even at small print sizes. This gives good scan reliability. Adding a pre-filled message increases the URL length and therefore the module count; keep messages short for best results.
Use dark modules on a light background. If adding a centre logo, raise the error correction level so the obscured modules can be reconstructed. ISO/IEC 18004 defines four error correction levels: L recovers approximately 7% of codewords, M approximately 15%, Q approximately 25%, and H approximately 30%.
Troubleshooting: why your WhatsApp QR code is not working
The phone number includes a plus sign. The wa.me format requires the number to omit the plus prefix. Remove it and regenerate.
The phone number retains a national leading zero. Numbers like 07700900000 for a UK mobile must become 447700900000 — replace the leading zero with the country code.
The phone number includes spaces, dashes or brackets. Strip all non-digit characters except the digits themselves.
WhatsApp is not installed on the scanning device. Scanning the code on a device without WhatsApp will open the web.whatsapp.com page in a browser, which requires a linked WhatsApp account to use. The code is working; WhatsApp is not present.
The pre-filled message contains unencoded special characters. Ampersands, question marks and quotes in the message can break the URL. Regenerate using this tool, which handles the encoding.
The code is too small or low-contrast to scan. Reprint larger, restore the four-module quiet zone, and use a dark colour on a white or light background.
Static versus dynamic WhatsApp QR codes
A wa.me QR code is static — the URL is encoded directly into the pattern. It requires no server, works offline (to scan the image), and never expires. However, if you need to change the phone number or the pre-filled message after printing, you must reprint.
| Static wa.me QR code | Dynamic QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | The wa.me URL itself | A short redirect URL |
| Editable after printing | No | Yes |
| Requires a live service | No | Yes |
| Scan analytics | No | Yes |
| Works if a third-party service closes | Yes | No |
For most WhatsApp use cases the static format is correct. The phone number does not change often, and the wa.me URL needs no redirect layer to function.
What this WhatsApp QR Code Generator gives you
This browser-based tool creates an official wa.me click-to-chat link for a phone number and an optional prefilled message. It is designed for sales enquiries, reservations, customer support, delivery questions and event contact points. The live preview updates while you edit, which makes it easier to catch a missing field or an unexpectedly dense symbol before download.
You can adjust matrix patterns, finder-eye styles, foreground and background colours, gradients, frames, size and an optional logo. Exports are available as SVG, PNG, WEBP and JPG at 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 pixels. SVG is the practical choice for professional print. A high-resolution PNG suits office documents and digital artwork.
The static payload is constructed in your browser. The information entered into the generator does not need to be uploaded to create the QR image. The destination number must use WhatsApp, and the user still chooses whether to send the prepared message.
Using this QR code in Bahrain and abroad
WhatsApp is widely used for business enquiries in Bahrain; use +973 international numbering, but remove the plus sign from the wa.me path as required.
Use British English spelling in customer-facing copy when that matches your organisation’s house style, and provide Arabic wording where the audience expects it. Keep the action after scanning obvious. A short line beside the symbol such as “Scan to save the contact” or “Scan to open the location” gives people confidence before they point their camera.
Test the final design on current iPhone and Android devices. Test it again after printing on the actual paper, sticker, card, sign or packaging material. Bahrain’s bright outdoor light can expose glare and low-contrast problems that are less obvious on a computer screen. For international use, confirm country codes, currencies, time zones, regional app availability and payment-network compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Open a question to read a concise technical answer.
01What is the wa.me link format for a WhatsApp QR code?+
The format is https://wa.me/<number> where the number is in international format with no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes and no brackets. To add a pre-filled message use https://wa.me/<number>?text=<URL-encoded-message>. This format is published in the official WhatsApp FAQ.
02How do I format a phone number for a WhatsApp QR code?+
Use the full international number with no plus sign, no leading zero, and no spaces or dashes. A US number like +1 (555) 123-4567 becomes 15551234567. A UK mobile like +44 7700 900000 becomes 447700900000. Omitting the country code or keeping the leading zero are the most common errors.
03Can a WhatsApp QR code pre-fill a message?+
Yes. Add ?text=<URL-encoded-message> after the phone number in the wa.me URL. The encoded message appears in the WhatsApp compose field when the recipient opens the link. The recipient must still choose to send it — scanning does not send the message automatically.
04Does a WhatsApp QR code expire?+
No. The QR code encodes a wa.me URL directly into the pattern. There is no expiry mechanism, no server dependency, and no account required to keep the code active. It stops working only if the WhatsApp number is deactivated.
05What is the difference between a WhatsApp QR code and the WhatsApp in-app QR code?+
A wa.me QR code is a URL you build with a tool and can print on any material with a custom design. The in-app QR code is generated by WhatsApp inside the app, cannot be customised, and must be scanned with WhatsApp's own scanner. They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.
06Does a WhatsApp QR code work on Android and iPhone?+
Yes. Any camera that can scan a standard QR code and any device with WhatsApp installed will open the chat. If WhatsApp is not installed, scanning opens web.whatsapp.com in the browser, which requires a linked WhatsApp account. The QR code itself follows ISO/IEC 18004 and is readable by any compliant scanner.
07How do I make a WhatsApp QR code for a WhatsApp Business account?+
Enter the WhatsApp Business account phone number in the same wa.me format as a personal account: country code followed by the number, no plus sign, no spaces. WhatsApp Business uses the same wa.me URL scheme. A pre-filled message matching your business entry point (for example, "I would like to enquire about your services") is a common addition for business codes.
08Will my WhatsApp QR code stop working if this website closes?+
No. The wa.me URL is encoded directly in the QR pattern. The code has no dependency on this generator or any other third-party service. As long as WhatsApp and the encoded number remain active, the code will work.
09Can I add a WhatsApp QR code to a business card?+
Yes. Print the code at 2 cm square or larger for reliable scanning at business-card distance. The wa.me URL is short, so the QR code stays relatively simple even with a pre-filled message, which helps at small sizes. Use a dark colour on a light background for maximum scan reliability.
10Is my phone number uploaded when I generate a WhatsApp QR code here?+
No. The code is generated in your browser using the number you type. Nothing is sent to a server. The wa.me URL and the QR pattern are computed locally. The only copy of your number that leaves your device is the image file you choose to download.
