PayPal QR Code Generator
Quick answer: A PayPal QR code created here encodes your PayPal. me link — the public payment page at paypal. me/yourusername. Scanning it opens that page in a browser or the PayPal app. This is not the same as the official PayPal in-app QR code used for in-person goods-and-services payments.
How to create a PayPal.me QR code
- Find your PayPal.me username by signing into PayPal, going to your PayPal.me page, and copying the handle after paypal.me/ in the URL.
- Enter your username in the field. Do not include the full URL — enter only the username portion.
- Add a fixed amount if you want senders to pay a specific value, or leave it empty to let the sender enter the amount on the PayPal.me page.
- If you include an amount, add the three-letter ISO 4217 currency code after the amount (for example, 25EUR or 50GBP) to specify the currency.
- Scan the generated code yourself to confirm the link opens the correct PayPal.me page before downloading.
- Customise the pattern, eye style, colours and logo if needed, then export PNG, SVG, WEBP or JPG at up to 4096 px.
The QR code is generated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.
What a PayPal.me QR code is
A PayPal.me QR code is a standard QR code whose payload is a URL pointing to the PayPal.me personal payment page. The QR symbol follows ISO/IEC 18004:2015, the international standard for QR Code symbology. The PayPal.me service itself is provided and operated by PayPal Holdings, Inc.
When someone scans the code, their device opens paypal.me/yourusername in a browser or directly in the PayPal app if it is installed. From there, the sender can enter an amount and complete the payment through the PayPal interface.
A PayPal.me link is a personal payment page. It is not a point-of-sale terminal. It is not connected to merchant services. The payment experience is the same as if the sender had typed the URL directly into a browser.
PayPal.me link format
URL structure
The PayPal.me link format, sourced from PayPal's own FAQ, follows this structure:
https://paypal.me/<username> https://paypal.me/<username>/<amount> https://paypal.me/<username>/<amount><CURRENCY_CODE>
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| username | Your PayPal.me handle, alphanumeric, up to 20 characters | janedoe |
| amount | Optional fixed amount as a number | 25 |
| CURRENCY_CODE | Optional ISO 4217 three-letter currency code appended directly | EUR, GBP, USD, AUD |
Examples: https://paypal.me/janedoe — open-value request https://paypal.me/janedoe/25 — 25 in the sender's default currency https://paypal.me/janedoe/25EUR — 25 EUR specifically
PayPal.me usernames are not case-sensitive. The username can contain letters and numbers. Special characters are not permitted in the username.
The PayPal.me QR code versus the official PayPal in-app QR code
This distinction is not clearly explained by most generators and it matters before you print anything at volume.
A PayPal.me QR code (which this generator creates) is a link to a public payment page. It works in any browser and does not require the PayPal app on the sender's device. Anyone with the link can access the page. It is suitable for tip jars, invoicing, and informal payments.
The official PayPal in-app QR code is a separate product generated inside the PayPal app under the Send and Receive or Zettle section. That code is used for in-person, goods-and-services payments and is connected to PayPal's buyer-seller protection policies. PayPal generates and controls that code; it cannot be created by a third-party generator. If you need in-person payment protection for a retail transaction, use the QR code generated inside the PayPal app.
| Feature | PayPal.me QR (this generator) | Official PayPal in-app QR |
|---|---|---|
| What is encoded | A paypal.me/username URL | PayPal's internal payment token |
| Created by | Any URL QR generator | PayPal app only |
| Works in browser | Yes | No — requires the PayPal app |
| Seller protection | No | Subject to PayPal's policy terms |
| Fixed amount option | Yes, via /amount in the URL | Set in the app at time of use |
| Suitable for retail POS | No | Yes, via PayPal Zettle |
When to use a PayPal.me QR code
Freelance invoices. A QR code printed on a PDF invoice or quote allows clients to pay without needing a bank transfer reference. The link works in any browser, so the client does not need the PayPal app installed.
Tip jars and donation points. A code on a counter or table allows customers to send a small payment without handling cash. Omitting the amount lets each person choose what to pay.
Online content creators. A code in a video description, a newsletter, or a printed flyer lets supporters send a one-off payment to a PayPal.me address without signing up for a platform.
Events and pop-up stalls. A printed code at a market stall or craft fair allows contactless payments from anyone with PayPal, without the seller needing a card reader.
Shared expenses among known parties. A code on a group chat printout lets housemates or event co-attendees quickly send their share to one person.
Design and print requirements
Maintain a four-module quiet zone on all sides. ISO/IEC 18004:2015 section 6.3.3 specifies this minimum margin, and scanners require it to locate the finder patterns.
Print at 2 cm by 2 cm or larger for close-range scanning. Increase to 3 cm when the code will be read from around one metre away.
The PayPal.me URL with a short username is a relatively small payload, so the generated code will be compact. That is an advantage: the modules can be larger at any given print size, making the code easier to scan in poor lighting.
Use dark modules on a light background. Inverted colours and low-contrast designs are the most common reason a code that looks correct fails to scan on a phone camera.
A centre logo is possible at error correction level H, which recovers approximately 30 percent of damaged codewords. Keep the logo to no more than 30 percent of the code area.
Troubleshooting: why your PayPal QR code is not working
The PayPal.me page does not open. Verify the username is correct and the PayPal.me page is active by opening the URL in a browser directly. PayPal.me pages can be deactivated from the PayPal account settings.
The wrong amount is shown. Check that the amount is entered as a plain number followed immediately by the currency code with no space: 25EUR, not 25 EUR.
The sender is taken to the PayPal login instead of the payment page. This is normal PayPal behaviour when the sender is not logged in. The sender must sign into PayPal to complete the payment.
The wrong PayPal account receives the money. Verify the username in the code matches the account you intend to receive funds. Scan the code before printing and follow the URL to confirm the page belongs to the correct account.
The code scans but the PayPal.me link is dead. PayPal.me links require an active PayPal account and the PayPal.me feature to be enabled in the account settings. If the feature was deactivated, the link stops working and the QR code becomes unusable.
The code is too small to scan reliably. A QR code read from a tip jar or retail counter needs to be at least 3 cm square. Print larger rather than smaller for any public-facing use.
Static and dynamic PayPal QR codes
A PayPal.me QR code is static. The URL is encoded directly in the pattern.
| Feature | Static PayPal.me QR code | Dynamic QR code |
|---|---|---|
| What is encoded | The paypal.me URL directly | A redirect URL pointing to paypal.me |
| Editable after printing | No | Yes |
| Scan analytics | No | Yes, via the redirect service |
| Depends on a service | Only on PayPal staying live | On both PayPal and the redirect host |
If you need to know how many people scan the code, a dynamic QR code can be wrapped around the PayPal.me URL using a redirect service. That adds a dependency: if the redirect service shuts down, the code stops working. For most use cases a static PayPal.me QR is sufficient and has no moving parts.
What this PayPal QR Code Generator gives you
This browser-based tool turns a PayPal.me payment page into a scannable link with an optional amount. It is designed for remote invoices, creator payments, simple payment requests and international customer links. The live preview updates while you edit, which makes it easier to catch a missing field or an unexpectedly dense symbol before download.
You can adjust matrix patterns, finder-eye styles, foreground and background colours, gradients, frames, size and an optional logo. Exports are available as SVG, PNG, WEBP and JPG at 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 pixels. SVG is the practical choice for professional print. A high-resolution PNG suits office documents and digital artwork.
The static payload is constructed in your browser. The information entered into the generator does not need to be uploaded to create the QR image. This is a PayPal.me link, not PayPal’s in-app merchant QR product, and eligibility, fees and protection depend on PayPal account terms.
Using this QR code in Bahrain and abroad
A Bahrain merchant should confirm that the relevant PayPal account, currency and receiving features are available before printing the link for customers.
Use British English spelling in customer-facing copy when that matches your organisation’s house style, and provide Arabic wording where the audience expects it. Keep the action after scanning obvious. A short line beside the symbol such as “Scan to save the contact” or “Scan to open the location” gives people confidence before they point their camera.
Test the final design on current iPhone and Android devices. Test it again after printing on the actual paper, sticker, card, sign or packaging material. Bahrain’s bright outdoor light can expose glare and low-contrast problems that are less obvious on a computer screen. For international use, confirm country codes, currencies, time zones, regional app availability and payment-network compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Open a question to read a concise technical answer.
01How do I make a QR code for my PayPal.me link?+
Enter your PayPal.me username in the generator. Optionally add a fixed amount and a three-letter currency code directly after it (for example, 25EUR). The QR code is built in your browser. Scan it to verify it opens the correct PayPal.me page before printing.
02What is the PayPal.me link format?+
The format is https://paypal.me/username for an open-value request, or https://paypal.me/username/25EUR for a fixed amount with a specified currency. The username is alphanumeric, up to 20 characters, and not case-sensitive. Source: PayPal's official PayPal.me FAQ.
03Can I pre-fill the amount in a PayPal QR code?+
Yes. Add the amount and ISO 4217 currency code to the URL: paypal.me/username/25EUR sets a fixed request of 25 euros. Omitting the amount lets the sender enter their own value on the PayPal.me page.
04What is the difference between a PayPal.me QR and the official PayPal in-app QR?+
A PayPal.me QR (created here) encodes a public link to a personal payment page. The official PayPal in-app QR is generated inside the PayPal app for in-person goods-and-services transactions and is connected to PayPal's seller protection. Third-party generators cannot create the in-app QR. If you need seller protection for a retail transaction, use the code generated inside the PayPal app.
05Does a PayPal QR code work without the PayPal app?+
Yes. A PayPal.me QR encodes a URL that opens in any browser. The sender does not need the PayPal app installed. They will be prompted to sign into PayPal in the browser if they are not already logged in.
06How do I get my PayPal.me username?+
Sign into PayPal at paypal.com. Go to your PayPal.me page — it is in the Send and Receive section or accessible via paypal.me in the top navigation on some account types. Your username is the part of the URL after paypal.me/.
07Does a PayPal.me QR code have seller protection?+
No. PayPal's seller protection applies to specific transaction types processed through the PayPal goods-and-services flow. A PayPal.me payment is a personal payment page and may be processed as a friends-and-family transaction depending on how the sender initiates it. Review PayPal's user agreement and seller protection policy for the terms that apply to your use case.
08Can I use a PayPal QR code for retail point-of-sale payments?+
A PayPal.me QR code is not a retail point-of-sale tool. It links to a personal payment page, not a merchant services terminal. For in-person retail payments with buyer-seller protection, use the QR code generated inside the PayPal app under PayPal Zettle or the official PayPal payment flow.
09Does a PayPal.me QR code expire?+
The QR code itself does not expire — the URL is encoded directly in the pattern. However, the PayPal.me link stops working if the PayPal.me feature is deactivated in the linked account settings. Keep the account active for the code to remain functional.
10What happens if I enter the wrong username in the QR code?+
The code will work but will send payments to the wrong PayPal.me account. There is no way to redirect payments made to a different account. Scan the generated code before printing and confirm the URL opens the correct PayPal.me page. Double-check the username character by character.
