FaceTime QR Code Generator
Quick answer: A FaceTime QR code encodes a facetime:// URL for video calls or a facetime-audio:// URL for audio-only calls. Both schemes work on iPhone, iPad and Mac with FaceTime installed. Android devices cannot open either scheme and will display the raw URL or return an error.
How to create a FaceTime QR code
- Choose the call type: video (facetime://) or audio only (facetime-audio://).
- Enter the target — either a phone number in international E.164 format including the plus sign, or an Apple ID email address.
- Confirm the generated URL shown in the preview is correct before downloading.
- Customise the pattern style, finder-eye style, colours and logo if needed.
- Download as PNG, SVG, WEBP or JPG at up to 4096 px.
The code is generated in your browser as you type. Nothing you enter is uploaded to a server.
What a FaceTime QR code is
A FaceTime QR code is a standard QR code whose payload is a FaceTime URL. The QR symbol follows ISO/IEC 18004, the international standard for QR Code symbology. The facetime:// and facetime-audio:// URL schemes are documented in Apple's developer URL scheme reference.
When someone with an Apple device scans the code, the operating system passes the URL to the FaceTime app, which prompts the user to start the call. The recipient must still accept the call — scanning does not connect automatically.
Critical platform limitation: Android devices do not support the facetime:// or facetime-audio:// URL schemes. Scanning the code on Android will show the raw URL text or produce an error depending on the scanner app. If the QR code will be distributed to a mixed audience of Apple and Android users, consider using a FaceTime link (SharePlay-era web link) as an alternative — covered in the comparison section below.
FaceTime URL scheme technical details
Syntax
Apple's developer documentation defines two URL schemes for FaceTime:
Video call: facetime://<phone_number_or_apple_id>
Audio-only call: facetime-audio://<phone_number>
Both schemes were published in Apple's URL Scheme Reference documentation. Source: developer.apple.com/library/archive/featuredarticles/iPhoneURLScheme_Reference/FacetimeLinks/FacetimeLinks.html
Target format — phone number versus Apple ID
| Target type | Format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | E.164 with plus sign and country code | facetime://+15551234567 |
| Apple ID | Email address | facetime://[email protected] |
| Audio only — phone | Phone number only (no email for audio) | facetime-audio://+15551234567 |
The plus sign is required for phone number targets in FaceTime URLs. This is the opposite of the wa.me format, which omits the plus. Confirm the target is registered to a FaceTime-enabled Apple account, otherwise the call attempt will fail with a "FaceTime is not available" message.
FaceTime audio versus video
The facetime-audio:// scheme initiates an audio-only call, equivalent to pressing the phone icon inside the FaceTime app. This is useful when the recipient is in a context where video is not appropriate, such as a moving vehicle or a loud public space. Audio calls consume less bandwidth than video calls, which may matter for recipients on limited mobile data.
Both schemes require the target to have FaceTime enabled. FaceTime can be disabled per contact in device settings, and can be disabled entirely by organisational Mobile Device Management policies on managed devices.
Device support
| Device / Platform | facetime:// (video) | facetime-audio:// (audio) |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (iOS 7 and later) | Yes | Yes |
| iPad (iPadOS 7 and later) | Yes | Yes |
| Mac (macOS 10.9 and later) | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Vision Pro | Yes | Yes |
| Android | No — scheme not recognised | No |
| Windows / Linux | No | No |
FaceTime links (SharePlay web links) as a cross-platform alternative
Starting with iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, FaceTime supports shareable web links in the format:
https://facetime.apple.com/join#<token>
These links open in a browser on any platform. Android and Windows users can join a FaceTime call from Chrome or Edge without installing an app, though they join as a guest with limited controls. The link is generated from within the FaceTime app on an Apple device, not from a third-party generator.
If your QR code will be printed for a mixed Apple and Android audience — for example, on a conference badge or a healthcare waiting-room poster — a FaceTime web link is more reliable than the facetime:// scheme. The web link URL can be encoded into a standard URL QR code using the URL QR code generator.
The facetime:// scheme QR code is appropriate when you are confident the audience is using Apple devices: clinic staff who all use iPhones, a real estate agent's business card targeting an iPhone-dominant market, or internal enterprise tools on a managed Apple fleet.
When to use a FaceTime QR code
Telehealth and remote consultations. A clinic door card or appointment letter can include a FaceTime QR code so an Apple-device patient can call the practitioner directly at the scheduled time without navigating a portal.
Real estate viewings. An agent's business card with a FaceTime QR code lets a buyer start a video showing request with one scan. This works well in markets where iPhone use is dominant.
Technical support desks. A support-desk poster in an Apple-centric office (education institution, creative agency, media company) lets staff call support without looking up a number.
Executive business cards. A senior professional whose contacts are primarily iPhone users can include a FaceTime audio QR code for direct contact without phone tag.
Recording studios and creative agencies. Apple hardware is common in creative industries; a FaceTime QR code on a studio door or project brief enables fast voice or video check-ins.
Design and print requirements
Maintain a quiet zone of at least four modules on all sides, as specified in ISO/IEC 18004. Scanners need this margin to locate the symbol boundary.
Print at 2 cm by 2 cm or larger for close-range scanning on a business card or document. Use 3 cm or more for table signage or a wall-mounted card. Use 8 cm or more for a poster viewed from more than a metre away.
The facetime:// URL is short, so the resulting QR code will be a low-version symbol with large, easy-to-scan modules. A phone number target produces a shorter URL than an Apple ID email. Either fits comfortably on a business card at 2 cm.
Add a clear text label beneath the code — for example, "FaceTime (Apple devices only)" or "iPhone/iPad/Mac" — so Android users know before scanning that the code is not for them. This label is not a design requirement but prevents confusion and reduces the support burden.
Use dark modules on a light background. If adding a centre logo, use a higher error correction level. ISO/IEC 18004 defines L (approximately 7% recovery), M (approximately 15%), Q (approximately 25%) and H (approximately 30%).
Troubleshooting: why your FaceTime QR code is not working
The scanning device is Android. The facetime:// and facetime-audio:// schemes are not supported on Android. Android will show the raw URL text. This is by design — there is no fix other than using a FaceTime web link instead.
FaceTime is disabled on the target device. The recipient's device may have FaceTime turned off, or an MDM policy may block it. The scanner will attempt the call and receive a "not available" response from Apple's servers.
The phone number is missing the plus sign. FaceTime URL targets require E.164 format with the plus prefix. A number without the plus may fail to route correctly.
The Apple ID email has a typo. An incorrect Apple ID produces a "person is not available on FaceTime" error. Verify the address before printing.
The QR code is too small or low-contrast. Reprint larger, restore the four-module quiet zone, and use a dark colour on a light background.
The FaceTime app is not installed. FaceTime comes pre-installed on Apple devices but can be deleted on iOS 12 and later. If deleted, the URL scheme will not open an app and may fail silently.
FaceTime QR codes compared to phone and URL QR codes
| FaceTime QR code | Phone (tel:) QR code | URL QR code (FaceTime link) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opens | FaceTime app | Phone dialer | Browser (cross-platform FaceTime) |
| Apple only | Yes | No | No |
| Video call | Yes (facetime://) | No | Yes (with FaceTime web link) |
| Audio call | Yes (facetime-audio://) | Yes | Limited (guest audio in browser) |
| Requires app | FaceTime (pre-installed) | None | Browser only |
| Best for | Apple-centric audiences | Any audience | Mixed Apple and Android audiences |
Use a phone (tel:) QR code when the goal is to make a standard voice call from any device. Use a FaceTime QR code when the goal is a video or audio call and the audience is confirmed Apple users. Use a URL QR code pointing to a FaceTime web link when the audience is mixed.
What this FaceTime QR Code Generator gives you
This browser-based tool encodes an Apple FaceTime video or audio URL for a supported phone number or Apple account. It is designed for Apple-device support desks, family contact cards, remote consultations and direct video-call invitations. The live preview updates while you edit, which makes it easier to catch a missing field or an unexpectedly dense symbol before download.
You can adjust matrix patterns, finder-eye styles, foreground and background colours, gradients, frames, size and an optional logo. Exports are available as SVG, PNG, WEBP and JPG at 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 pixels. SVG is the practical choice for professional print. A high-resolution PNG suits office documents and digital artwork.
The static payload is constructed in your browser. The information entered into the generator does not need to be uploaded to create the QR image. Android and many Windows devices cannot open FaceTime URL schemes, so this format should never be the only contact method.
Using this QR code in Bahrain and abroad
Use it only where the intended Bahrain audience is expected to have an iPhone, iPad or Mac, and offer a platform-neutral alternative for everyone else.
Use British English spelling in customer-facing copy when that matches your organisation’s house style, and provide Arabic wording where the audience expects it. Keep the action after scanning obvious. A short line beside the symbol such as “Scan to save the contact” or “Scan to open the location” gives people confidence before they point their camera.
Test the final design on current iPhone and Android devices. Test it again after printing on the actual paper, sticker, card, sign or packaging material. Bahrain’s bright outdoor light can expose glare and low-contrast problems that are less obvious on a computer screen. For international use, confirm country codes, currencies, time zones, regional app availability and payment-network compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Open a question to read a concise technical answer.
01Does a FaceTime QR code work on Android?+
No. The facetime:// and facetime-audio:// URL schemes are Apple-only. Android devices do not recognise these schemes and will display the raw URL text or return an error. For a QR code that starts a video call on both Apple and Android, encode a FaceTime web link (generated inside the FaceTime app on iOS 15 or later) as a URL QR code instead.
02What is the facetime:// URL format?+
The format is facetime://<target> where the target is either a phone number in E.164 international format including the plus sign (for example facetime://+15551234567) or an Apple ID email address (for example facetime://[email protected]). For audio-only calls, use facetime-audio://<phone_number>. Both schemes are documented in Apple's developer URL scheme reference.
03What is the difference between facetime:// and facetime-audio://?+
The facetime:// scheme initiates a video call. The facetime-audio:// scheme initiates an audio-only call. Audio calls use less bandwidth and are appropriate when the recipient is in a mobile context. Both require the target to have FaceTime enabled on their Apple device.
04Can I use a phone number or an Apple ID for a FaceTime QR code?+
Either works for video calls. The phone number must be in E.164 international format with the plus sign — for example +15551234567. An Apple ID is the registered email address for the Apple account. For audio-only calls (facetime-audio://), only a phone number is supported, not an Apple ID email.
05What is a FaceTime SharePlay link and how is it different?+
A FaceTime SharePlay link is a web URL in the format https://facetime.apple.com/join#<token> generated inside the FaceTime app on iOS 15 or later. It allows Android and Windows users to join a FaceTime call in their browser without the FaceTime app. The facetime:// scheme QR code requires the FaceTime app and only works on Apple devices.
06How do I add a FaceTime QR code to a business card?+
Print the code at 2 cm square or larger for reliable scanning at arm's length. Add a text label such as "FaceTime (iPhone/iPad/Mac)" so Android users know before scanning. The facetime:// URL is short, producing a compact, scannable code even at small sizes. Use a dark colour on a light background.
07Why does my FaceTime QR code show text instead of starting a call?+
The scanning device is almost certainly not running iOS, iPadOS or macOS. Android, Windows and Linux do not support the facetime:// scheme, so scanners on those platforms display the raw URL. The QR code itself is correct; the scheme is simply not available on that device.
08Does a FaceTime QR code expire?+
No. The facetime:// URL is encoded directly in the pattern with no expiry date and no server dependency. The code continues to work as long as the phone number or Apple ID it targets is active and has FaceTime enabled. There is no external service required to keep the code functional.
09Can FaceTime be disabled on an iPhone that receives a scan?+
Yes. FaceTime can be turned off in iOS Settings, restricted by Screen Time parental controls, or disabled by a Mobile Device Management profile on a managed device. If FaceTime is disabled, scanning the QR code will produce a "FaceTime is not available" response. Confirm your audience has FaceTime enabled before distributing the code.
10Is my information uploaded when I generate a FaceTime QR code here?+
No. The QR code is generated in your browser. The phone number or Apple ID you enter is not sent to a server. The only copy that leaves your device is the image file you choose to download.
