ISBN Barcode Generator
Quick answer: An ISBN barcode is an EAN-13 symbol using the GS1 Bookland prefix 978 or 979, governed by ISO 2108:2017 and ISO/IEC 15420. An ISBN-13 is a GTIN-13 — it scans at retail POS just as any EAN-13 does. This generator produces the symbol from your ISBN.
What an ISBN barcode is
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. The governing standard is ISO 2108:2017, maintained by the International ISBN Agency in London. The barcode format for an ISBN is EAN-13, specified in ISO/IEC 15420 — the same standard that governs retail product barcodes.
An ISBN-13 is structurally a GTIN-13 using the GS1 Bookland prefix 978 or 979. Because it is a GTIN-13, an ISBN barcode scans at retail point-of-sale systems worldwide using the same readers that scan product barcodes. Bookshops, Amazon, library management systems and distribution warehouses all use standard EAN-13 readers to process ISBN barcodes.
The ISBN number itself is not created by a barcode generator. ISBNs are issued by national ISBN agencies: Bowker in the United States, Nielsen in the United Kingdom, the National Library in many other countries. A generator takes an existing, officially assigned ISBN and produces the visual barcode symbol that carries it.

ISBN-13 structure
An ISBN-13 has five logical sections:
GS1 prefix. Always 978 or 979. The 978 prefix covers most existing ISBNs; 979 is being allocated to national agencies as the 978 space fills.
Registration group element. Identifies the country, language area or territory. For example, group 0 and 1 are used in English-speaking countries; group 3 in German-speaking countries.
Registrant element. Identifies the publisher or self-publishing author. Assigned by the national ISBN agency.
Publication element. The specific title or edition within the publisher's range. Assigned by the publisher.
Check digit. The thirteenth digit, calculated by the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm from the first 12 digits.
How the ISBN-13 check digit is calculated
The algorithm is identical to EAN-13. Apply the GS1 modulo-10 method to the first 12 digits: multiply alternately by 1 and 3 from left to right (position 1 = ×1, position 2 = ×3, …), sum the 12 products, subtract the units digit from 10, and use 0 if the result is 10.
Worked example: 978014013784_ (check digit unknown).
Digits 1–12: 9 7 8 0 1 4 0 1 3 7 8 4
Apply weights ×1, ×3, ×1, ×3 …: 9×1 = 9 7×3 = 21 8×1 = 8 0×3 = 0 1×1 = 1 4×3 = 12 0×1 = 0 1×3 = 3 3×1 = 3 7×3 = 21 8×1 = 8 4×3 = 12
Sum = 9 + 21 + 8 + 0 + 1 + 12 + 0 + 3 + 3 + 21 + 8 + 12 = 98
Units digit of 98 = 8. Check digit = 10 − 8 = 2.
Complete ISBN-13: 9780140137842.
ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 conversion
ISBN-10 was the format used before 1 January 2007. Since that date, only 13-digit ISBNs are assigned. If you have a legacy ISBN-10, convert it to ISBN-13 for use in a barcode.
Step 1: Drop the ISBN-10 check digit (the last character, which may be a digit or the letter X). Step 2: Prepend 978 to the remaining 9 digits. Step 3: Calculate a new check digit using the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm on the 12-digit string.
The ISBN-10 check digit uses a different algorithm — modulo-11 with weights 10, 9, 8 … 2, 1 applied left to right, with X representing a remainder of 10. This algorithm does not apply to ISBN-13. Always recalculate the check digit when converting.
Example: ISBN-10 is 014013784X.
- Drop the X: 014013784 (9 digits)
- Prepend 978: 978014013784
- Calculate GS1 modulo-10 check digit: result is 2 (as shown in the worked example above)
- ISBN-13: 9780140137842
The EAN-5 price add-on
Many books carry a 5-digit supplemental barcode to the right of the main ISBN symbol. This is an EAN-5 (also written EAN-5 or UPC-5) supplemental and encodes a suggested retail price.
The EAN-5 format for books: the first digit indicates currency (5 = US dollars; 6 = Canadian dollars; 0 or 9 = no price stated). The remaining four digits encode the price in that currency with implied decimal. For example, 54999 means US$49.99.
EAN-5 is not part of the ISBN standard itself. Its use is a publishing industry convention, particularly in North America. Not all book retailers require it. Check your distributor's specifications before including it on a cover.
Where ISBNs come from — the agency allocation requirement
This is the most important section for self-publishers.
An ISBN is not a number you choose or invent. ISBNs are allocated by national ISBN agencies:
- United States: Bowker (myidentifiers.com)
- United Kingdom: Nielsen
- Most other countries: the national library or a designated national agency
A generator cannot create an ISBN. It takes an officially assigned ISBN and encodes it into a barcode symbol. Generating a symbol with a 978-prefix number you invented does not produce a valid ISBN — it produces a barcode that scans but has no registry record, and retailers and distributors will reject the title.
This is directly parallel to the GS1 licensing requirement for product GTINs: the barcode image is free to generate; the number requires an official assignment from the relevant body.
Options for self-publishers:
- Purchase ISBNs through your national agency (Bowker sells individual ISBNs in the US).
- In some countries, ISBNs are available free of charge from the national library.
- Some self-publishing platforms (Amazon KDP, IngramSpark) assign a platform ISBN at no cost, but that ISBN is owned by the platform, not by you. If you want to distribute through multiple channels independently, obtain your own ISBN from Bowker or your national agency.
No GS1 US pricing applies directly to ISBNs — ISBNs are administered separately from GTIN company prefixes. However, if you need a standard product GTIN for a non-book item using EAN-13, the GS1 US pricing applies: single GTIN $30 (source: https://www.gs1us.org/upcs-barcodes-prefixes/what-is-a-prefix, verified 2026-06-02).
When to use an ISBN barcode generator
Generating barcode art for an officially assigned ISBN. Once you have your ISBN from Bowker or another agency, this generator produces the correctly structured EAN-13 symbol to place on the back cover.
Converting a legacy ISBN-10 to ISBN-13. Calculate the ISBN-13 and generate the current-standard barcode for reprints or new editions.
Packaging artwork before final ISBN assignment. Generate a clearly marked placeholder in the correct physical format so cover designers can position the barcode correctly before the official number is ready.
Proofing and pre-press verification. Verify that the check digit is correct and the quiet zones are intact before sending cover artwork to print.
Testing distributor and library scanning systems. Generate a correctly structured ISBN barcode to test whether a new retail or library system decodes it correctly.
Design and print requirements for book cover barcodes
Print the ISBN barcode on the lower half of the back cover, typically the lower-right corner, as specified in the ISBN Manual. The symbol must be printed at 80%–200% of nominal EAN-13 size with the required quiet zones.
The human-readable ISBN-13 number must appear in text immediately above the barcode symbol, preceded by the label "ISBN".
If including an EAN-5 price add-on, it is printed to the right of the main symbol with a small gap. The two symbols are scanned separately.
Dark bars on a white or light background. Avoid printing over cover imagery or dark backgrounds without a pre-press reflectance check. Silver and metallic coatings on book covers are a common cause of scan failures in retail environments.
Export from this generator at 2048 px minimum; 4096 px is preferred for print-ready artwork files sent to a pre-press house. SVG format is lossless and preferred for cover art.
Troubleshooting: why your ISBN barcode is not scanning
Check digit is wrong after ISBN-10 conversion. The most common mistake is using the ISBN-10 check digit rather than recalculating using the GS1 modulo-10 method. Always recalculate.
978 or 979 prefix is missing. Entering a 10-digit ISBN-10 directly (without the 978 prefix and recalculation) produces a symbol that encodes 10 digits, not 13 — a different barcode altogether.
Quiet zones are trimmed in the cover bleed. Cover artwork sent to a printer with a bleed area can clip the barcode quiet zones. Ensure the barcode sits inside the safe zone, not in the bleed area.
EAN-5 add-on is absent from the cover but expected by the distributor. Some North American distributors require the EAN-5 price code. Confirm with your distributor before going to press.
Print resolution is too low. Export at 2048 px or higher and place at 100% in the cover layout. Scaling up a low-resolution PNG introduces interpolation artefacts that reduce barcode contrast.

Using this barcode in Bahrain and international supply chains
Bahrain retailers, importers, manufacturers and logistics teams should match identifiers to the rules of their trading partners. Retail GTINs must come from the proper issuing organisation; a generator creates artwork but does not assign ownership. Internal stock and asset references may use organisation-defined values when the receiving system supports them.
Use British English in operational guidance where it matches your organisation’s style, and add Arabic instructions for teams that need them. Print under the actual conditions of use. Bahrain’s heat, bright light, dust, curved packaging and reflective laminate can expose contrast or surface problems that are invisible on a monitor.
Keep quiet zones clear, avoid stretching the image, and prefer dark bars on a plain light background. Scan samples from the beginning, middle and end of a print run. For regulated retail, healthcare, publishing or logistics use, confirm the current GS1, ISBN-agency, customer or industry specification before approving production.
Before you print
- Correct symbology selected
- Identifier ownership confirmed
- Check digit verified
- Quiet zones kept clear
- Strong bar contrast
- Aspect ratio unchanged
- SVG or high-resolution PNG
- Production scanner test
Frequently asked questions
Open a question to read a concise technical answer.
01How do I create an ISBN barcode for my book?+
Enter your 13-digit ISBN (starting with 978 or 979) into the data field. The tool generates a correctly structured EAN-13 / ISBN-13 symbol in your browser. Export as PNG or SVG for cover artwork. The ISBN number must come from your national ISBN agency — Bowker in the US — before you generate the barcode; a generator cannot create a valid ISBN.
02What is the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?+
ISBN-10 used 10 digits with a modulo-11 check character (using X for a remainder of 10). Since 1 January 2007, only 13-digit ISBNs are assigned and used in barcodes. ISBN-13 uses the GS1 modulo-10 check digit algorithm, the same as EAN-13. To convert an ISBN-10: drop the check character, prepend 978, and recalculate the check digit using the GS1 modulo-10 method.
03Is an ISBN barcode the same as an EAN-13 barcode?+
Yes. An ISBN-13 is a GTIN-13 using the GS1 Bookland prefix 978 or 979. The barcode symbol is an EAN-13 by ISO/IEC 15420. It scans at retail POS systems worldwide using the same readers that scan product barcodes. The distinction is purely in how the number is allocated: ISBNs come from national ISBN agencies, not from GS1 company prefixes.
04Where do I get an ISBN number?+
In the US, purchase ISBNs from Bowker (myidentifiers.com). In the UK, contact Nielsen. Most other countries have a national ISBN agency through the national library or a designated body. Some self-publishing platforms (Amazon KDP, IngramSpark) provide a free platform-owned ISBN, but that ISBN is controlled by the platform. To own your ISBN independently, purchase from your national agency.
05What is the check digit for an ISBN-13?+
The check digit uses the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm applied to the first 12 digits: multiply alternately by 1 and 3 left to right, sum the products, subtract the units digit from 10, and use 0 if the result is 10. This is identical to the EAN-13 check digit method. For example, 978014013784 gives a sum of 98 and a check digit of 2, producing 9780140137842. Source: ISBN Manual 2012 Appendix 1.
06Does an ISBN barcode need a price add-on?+
A price add-on is optional, not required by the ISBN standard. The EAN-5 (5-digit supplemental barcode) encodes a suggested retail price and is a North American publishing convention. The first digit indicates currency (5 = USD, 6 = CAD); the remaining four digits encode the price with implied decimal. Check your distributor's requirements before including or excluding it.
07How do I convert an ISBN-10 to ISBN-13?+
Drop the ISBN-10 check character (last digit or X). Prepend 978 to the remaining 9 digits. Apply the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm to the resulting 12-digit string to calculate a new check digit. The ISBN-10 check character uses modulo-11 and is not valid for the ISBN-13 barcode — always recalculate. Example: ISBN-10 014013784X becomes ISBN-13 9780140137842.
08Can I self-publish without an ISBN?+
You can publish without an ISBN in many cases. Amazon KDP allows publishing without an ISBN for ebooks and can assign its own ASIN. Print books sold only through a single platform may not require an independent ISBN. However, for distribution through bookshops, libraries and multi-channel retail, an ISBN is required. Without an ISBN, the book cannot carry a retail-standard barcode.
09Is the 979 prefix valid for ISBN barcodes?+
Yes. The 979 prefix is a valid GS1 Bookland prefix for ISBN-13 barcodes. It is being allocated to national agencies as the 978 space fills. Note that there is no ISBN-10 equivalent for 979-prefix ISBNs — the ISBN-10-to-ISBN-13 conversion via prepending 978 does not apply to 979-prefix numbers. 979-prefix ISBNs exist only in 13-digit form.
10Is the ISBN barcode generated in the browser?+
Yes. The barcode is generated entirely in your browser. The ISBN you enter is not sent to any server. The only data that leaves your device is the image file you download.
